Follow curved oyster-shell paths through our lush Victorian garden shaded by 150-year-old magnolia trees. Climb the stairs to the elegant main entrance surrounded by soaring columns and gleaming windows. Hear the stories of the Bellamy family, as well as those of the free and enslaved black artisans who built the home and crafted intricate details throughout the house. Know that you are walking through history.
Welcome to the Bellamy Mansion Museum, one of North Carolina’s most spectacular examples of antebellum architecture. Located in downtown Wilmington, the mansion was built for physician and planter John Dillard Bellamy, his wife, Eliza McIlhenny Harriss, and their nine children on the eve of the Civil War. The mansion now serves as a museum of history and the design arts, offering daily tours and many dynamic educational and cultural programs throughout the year. Tour the magnificent 10,000-square-foot home, visit the meticulously-recreated gardens, and walk through the recently restored Slave Quarters, one of very few preserved urban slave quarters in the country.
Plan your visit to the Bellamy today for an extraordinary stroll through the past, present and future of this historic site.

Event Details
The North Carolina Coastal Federation invites community members and volunteers to help bag oyster shells at the Sunset Beach Fire Department Station One next to the town’s waterfront park. During the event, volunteers will be filling mesh bags with oyster shells that will be used to build a living shoreline at the town’s park. The bags will be placed along the shoreline to protect them it from erosion and create valuable habitat.
Volunteers are needed to cut, tie, lift and stack the shell bags. These events are suitable for adults, organized groups and supervised children over the age of 12.
There will be activities to accommodate a wide range of physical abilities, and snacks and lunch are provided. Volunteers should dress in layers for the weather and in clothes that are comfortable but that can also get dirty. Volunteers should also wear closed-toe shoes or boots that fully cover their feet. All bagging tools and equipment will be provided.
These oyster shell bagging events support the federation’s living shoreline projects. For more information on living shorelines, visit the Living Shorelines Academy website, an online exchange of information that encourages the use of environmentally friendly living shoreline erosion control practices to protect valuable waterfront property.
